About this artwork
This painting originated from my first exhibition, themed "Africa'nitté," meaning what makes us African. The idea was not only to find elements that belong to us as Africans, but above all, those that cultivate our humanity. After weeks of research, I came across these African symbols called adinkra. I was immediately captivated by the values they represent. There are many of them, but I chose those that resonate most deeply with me.
So this painting,… titled "Symbol & Substance," is an intimate cartography of my convictions. Each line draws on African heritage to embody a value that is dear to me. Here, the form (the symbol) is only the vehicle of a deeper truth (the substance) that guides my path every day.
« Symbols result from the representation of human and social relationships through the modulation of lines, shapes, colors, and light. »
Marie Dione is an artist based in Senegal whose paintings have been exhibited nationally. Through her art, she invites respect for the identity of different beings, which she believes is vital for the unity and security of our environment. In her artistic approach, she employs African symbols as well as forms, lines, and colors that, by their modulation, through light and dark, suggest messages, ideas, and feelings.
