About this artwork
Black sand dominates Iceland’s beaches. It washes up on the banks of glacial rivers and sits at the bottom of thermal pools. On particularly windy days, you can see it from miles away, blowing like smog across the horizon.
But get up close and black become subtly beautiful. What, at first glance, seems monochrome is textured evidence of recent motion. Often with hints of other minerals or ores that regularly get coughed up or churned over.
In… fact, every grain is a reminder that Iceland is actively volcanic. On my first trip, rocks tumbling down the mountainside signalled a 6.8 quake as we barreled down the highway.
