About this artwork
Pfeiffer Beach (Big Sur, California) is by far the most dramatic beach that I've worked on. Manganese garnet in surrounding cliffs gets tossed up as slashes of purple on a creamy beach. Dashes of black add to the effect.
Parts of the beach are rocky, giving shots as surprising as this. On gentler slopes, the waves leave subtle patterns and shades.
The window of opportunity to shoot at Pfeiffer Beach is narrow. High cliffs throw shade for much… of the day. As the sun lowers to a good angle, the risk of fog rolling in increases.
After the Waves is a series started in 2014, researching unusual beaches whenever I travel for work or pleasure. To date, it includes works from California, Canada, France, Greece and Iceland. Initially conceived as a personal challenge to 'beat the next wave', the series took on new meaning for me in 2020. As COVID-19 made each ‘new wave’ a source of global stress, I turned back to the beauty a wave can leave behind.
