About this artwork
These photos of Divers were taken in a public swimming pool in Northern Tuscany, Italy. The series transpired from a desire to develop a more painterly and expressive photographic language and come from a larger body of work - "Into Reverie". All effects are created in-camera with slow shutter speeds, camera pans, zooms and camera shakes. The distorted movement twists characters into a surreal, dreamlike world, hanging in limbo between reality and…
un-reality. The images become enigmatic, originating a weird world, betwixt and transmuted through the passage of time. Shot digitally on a Canon 7D.

Printed on Exhibition Photo Baryta Archival paper. Signed and dated in pencil on the back.

Mark McEvoy is a photographer inspired by a lifetime of travel and exploration. Primarily a documentary and portrait photographer, he has been active since the late 1980s capturing the lives and stories of everyday people and surrounding nature and landscapes. He draws inspiration from daily life, cultural/psychological identity, rituals and the contrasts that divide the world through opposing beliefs and traditions. Within his practice he employs a variety of photographic approaches such as experimenting with technical restrictions and self-imposed constraints. He is especially interested in what lies below the surface, unnoticed and often ignored with a focus on social, environmental and political themes. His images powerfully convey the intricacies of human emotion and experience, inviting viewers into open-ended interpretation—sometimes evocative, beautiful, mysterious, or even confrontational.
