About this artwork
Disillusioned depicts how we have all at one time or another misconceived what is reality or what is an unreality. This early charcoal drawing combines the figure in a surreal context to express a profound vulnerability and a sense of disconnection. The contorted angelic figure with wings and merging tentacles conveys a haunting tension between beauty and despair. It’s a visual exploration of inner conflict and the fragile nature of hope.
Mark Richard Parkin is a multidisciplinary artist with classical training, whose background spans prestigious art education in Canada, Europe, and the UK, and extensive international teaching experience. His work skillfully blends traditional oil, watercolor, drawing, and printmaking techniques with bold experimentation, often incorporating organic materials and found objects in a surrealist, assemblage style. He conjures dreamlike worlds through direct brushwork, layering, and meticulous detail, creating thought-provoking juxtapositions that explore consciousness, science, and the borders of reality. His art pulses with psychological intensity, inviting viewers into worlds of existential wonder and introspective emotion.
