About this artwork
Martin Ecker's artworks have long been characterized by a prominent presence of the element gold. Gold opens up a fascinating perspective for the viewer that extends beyond the picture's surface. Ecker often manipulates the gold in his works, varying between genuine gold paper, copper and imitation gold. Traces of oxidation and surface scratches enliven the gold, creating a reflective, mirror-like environment.
For Ecker, the use of gold symbolizes… an ambivalent relationship between firm trust and distrust of other values. Gold gains importance in moments of distrust, while it stagnates in times of confidence. However, the breathtaking brilliance of this noble material is not only of material value, but also serves as a source of comfort and fulfillment on both a material and spiritual level.
