About this artwork
"Dancing Class" is part of a series Titled "Wedding Book" based on wedding photos borrowed from family & friends.
It was summer when my daughter was visiting that I began to think about women & their complicated lives – too many hats & too little time - with the world shifting & changing around them. But ideas like paintings evolve slowly over time - beneath the surface – until that perfect & unexpected moment of clarity. Like walking in to my… friend’s shop just in time to see pictures of his daughter’s wedding scrolling by on the computer. It was a fairly casual outdoor wedding by traditional standards but elegant & still holding to custom. It seemed the perfect metaphor, delivered intact, to honor women as they traverse this new & unexplored territory – our present world.

« My work completes me. »
Mary Hatch is an American painter and printmaker whose works have been widely exhibited in the United States. Her artistic expression is fueled by the desire to "extract the truth". Hatch describes her figurative pieces as having evolved slowly over time. In addition to discovering her own voice, her art is also influenced by world events and elements of her daily life. While she enjoys digital creation, her painterly compositions are made using oils and pigments on linen.
