It is said that beyond the ancient nomadic routes, where the sand erases all memory of passage, there lies a valley concealed between stone. No map records it, and no path leads to it by intention. One arrives only by deviation, when direction has already been lost. Its entrance is narrow and easily missed, marked only by faint signs in the rock.
There, hidden from the open desert, stands Zerzura — a city pale as an opal against the sand, a verdant… symbiosis between city and oasis. The city guards the oasis, and the oasis sustains the city.
Through the city runs a long and majestic mirror — an infinite body of silver water, so still that it seems less a surface than a passage into another dimension. Upon it, the city appears again, inverted and complete, so that the eye hesitates between original and echo.
Zerzura seems not to rest upon the desert, but to float — suspended between two worlds.
Mateo Aranda is a sculptor working primarily with hand-built ceramic stoneware. His practice brings together a background in science and an early connection to ceramics.
When creating, he moves between clear intention and material exploration—testing structure, tension, and balance, while seeking a clear form and a strong visual presence.
He works with simple means to remain focused and independent, sustaining the practice on his own terms, with freedom.
Sculptures generate a field where form, perception, and sensation interact.
