About this artwork
This geometric animal is built using the slab technique, assembled piece by piece like a puzzle. Made in stoneware, it is finished with a blue-grey glaze and oxide markings. A gold lustre is applied in a third firing to highlight selected details.
Its form brings together playfulness and character, evoking both a brutalist building and a creature. The surface drawings suggest a primitive language — somewhere between symbols, maps, and traces of… an imagined world.
The piece carries the lively energy of an animal, while remaining open in interpretation. It does not represent a specific species — each viewer recognizes something different.

Mateo Aranda is a sculptor working primarily with hand-built ceramic stoneware. His practice brings together a background in science and an early connection to ceramics.
When creating, he moves between clear intention and material exploration—testing structure, tension, and balance, while seeking a clear form and a strong visual presence.
He works with simple means to remain focused and independent, sustaining the practice on his own terms, with freedom.
Sculptures generate a field where form, perception, and sensation interact.
