About this artwork
I had been kayaking along the shoreline of Abel Tasman National Park for a few days. As often happens when I spend enough time immersed in nature, memories from my early childhood in Germany began to surface.
That morning, I woke with the sinking thought that I had missed the sunrise. But when I poked my head out of my small tent, I saw an incredible cloud being slowly pierced by the sun above. I sprinted to the beach, barely managed to plant my… tripod in the sand, and hit the shutter.
The moment lasted only a few seconds, but it immediately reminded me of a picture that used to hang in my late grandmother’s kitchen — a surreal artwork that incorporated X-ray images. Something about the light and the pattern in the sky echoed that strange, luminous quality.
