About this artwork
One of the central themes of the Black Lives Matter Movement is police brutality when dealing with black men.
This painting uses one of Michael's favorite methods of making a statement: Abstract symbolism.
The power of Michael's message lays in the portrayal of a stark white light in the dead of night focusing our attention on how, do to the simple color of their skin, black men are in danger of being killed by a paranoid white police force. …
The other symbolic parts of the work include the various communities and their reaction to the racial violence:
First, the blood of the assaulted black man seems to trickle down to a surprised white community.
Second, the black consciousness of the killed man seems to flow into the broader black community where
more painful and bloody cries ring out.
Lastly, the remaining community of Asians, Latinos, and others are scared and worry that they may be next.
A sorry commentary on our American landscape.
