In the year 2000 Oderberger Straße in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, many houses had not yet been renovated and it was a popular street for visiting cafes and restaurants. Since then, all the houses have been renovated and rents have risen, but the street is still a popular nightlife destination.
Michel Meijer makes documentaries with text and images. Two recurring subjects in the documentaries are: religious events and cultural landscapes. Photography makes it possible to create a detailed image relatively quickly and easily. In addition, a photograph shows whether a subject or object exists or has existed. The motivation for making documentaries for Michel is the question, "What does something look like in a certain place and time?"
Michel Meijer was born (1970) and raised in Leeuwarden (the Netherlands). In Groningen ( the Netherlands) he studied fine art at the school of arts Academie Minerva. After school he participated in several exhibitions showing paintings, photographs and installations.
In 1999, Michel Meijer visited Berlin to carry out a photography project. He liked the extensive infrastructure, many facilities and the cultural multiplicity very much. Therefore, he chose Berlin as his new home. After visiting the city regularly, he moved to Berlin in 2001.
