About this artwork
💜🏳️⚧️ "Gendered."
This piece grew out of the story of Naina, a transgender woman from India whose journey moved me deeply. An engineer by training, she lost her career the moment she transitioned, yet she rebuilt her life on her own terms, becoming a writer, a pilot, a model, and a fearless advocate.
I didn't set out to paint her exact likeness, but the essence of her story. Worked in paint and paper, she looks back over her shoulder, acknowledging… the past while her posture says clearly: I am moving forward, this is my decision. A butterfly marks transformation, the breaking free of becoming, and the transgender emblem at her neck is a quiet, firm declaration of identity, set against symbols of the LGBTQ+ and trans communities.
Her story belongs to countless others fighting simply to exist, to love, and to be seen.

Mihira Karra, a self-taught artist from Calcutta, India, channels her background in international development and a lifelong passion for drawing into striking narrative fabric collages and mixed media works. She meticulously assembles intricately cut fabrics in a mosaic-like technique, blending portraiture with layers of cultural and personal biography, and often experiments with charcoal, paint, and watercolors. Her art radiates empathy, resilience, and a celebration of unheard stories, inviting viewers into an intimate connection with the strength and dignity of her subjects.
