About this artwork
I remember the moment I laid the first strokes of color on the canvas. I still felt the movement of the sea within me, that almost living agitation that I wanted to capture. I didn't paint a calm sea: I painted the one I felt, vibrant, unpredictable, traversed by light.
I chose these sinagot sails as an anchor point, a human presence in the face of immensity. I didn't place this boat there by chance: it's a response to the sea, a silent resistance.… By painting it slightly tilted, I wanted to convey this tension, this fragile balance between control and surrender.
Each white touch on the water, conceived as a burst of life, invites you to lose yourself in the waves, to feel the wind and the salt. It's not just a landscape, it's a sensation I sought to revive.
Sophie Mollier-Rousseau, drawing on her background in photography and her apprenticeship with masters at the Beaux-Arts, primarily expresses herself through oil painting on canvas. She wields brushes and palette knives to create both hyperrealistic landscapes and works reflecting fleeting impressions and ephemeral feelings, brilliantly adopting a chameleon-like style. Through her paintings, she captures tranquility, the light piercing the darkness, and invites contemplation and serenity in the face of the frenzy of daily life.
