About this artwork
Monica is inspired by the process of building and removing layers in order to reveal what is really underneath - whether what is hidden away in the bottom layers shows our true selves below masks people wear in order to live and protect ourselves in the world, or emotions that are so complicated and fluid that we only get to the truth once all the complexity and layers are removed. This is a colorful, vibrant abstract painting created using gesso…
and oil paint in various shades of red, pink, purple, green and blue.

« Artists are storytellers. Abstraction feels liberating and there’s no fixed narrative so the story can change at any moment and that’s okay. »
Monica Shulman uses gestural abstraction as a narrative method, exploring subjective persona themes that center around duality and touch upon growth, love, rejection, isolation, etc. Inspired by the process of building and removing layers, Shulman studies concepts relating to excavation and discovery, as well as change and evolution, through her compositions. She uses varying mediums which include oils, acrylics, oil sticks, ink, house paint, gesso, and pastels.
