The cause is changes in the dynamics of the jet stream, a high-altitude wind that spans the globe and controls the movements of highs and lows. Western Europe and the Ukraine are particularly susceptible to this. These are the granaries of the earth. The global hazard is, that it could lead to crop losses in several of the granaries at the same time in the future - with corresponding risks for the global food supply. As a result, shortages and price increases may also affect regions that are not affected by the extreme heat.
