About this artwork
In medieval gardens, foxgloves were believed to be sacred to the Virgin Mary. In the earliest recordings of the Language of Flowers, foxgloves symbolized riddles, conundrums, and secrets. The poppy remains a humble, poignant symbol of remembrance and hope. In this piece, the foxglove reaches out it’s blooms to the center of the piece, creating a wreath effect of florals and imagery as if inviting you into the garden. Beyond the garden wall is a place…
in our minds we go for respite when the rest of the world is spinning too quickly for us to enjoy.

« I aim to make the mundane fascinating and to shine a spotlight on the overlooked things in life. »
Nancy Joyce is an American mixed-media artist who is interested in the concepts of time and circles, which she explores through themes such as flowers gone to seed, wheels and the flight patterns of birds. Layers are an important part of Joyce’s work. She builds up her paintings with handmade papers, modelling paste, acrylics and oils, often sanding down certain sections for extra texture and depth. Joyce has become increasingly interested in the female experience, with her ethereal works exploring the multifaceted relationship that women have with time.
