About this artwork
“Оберіг” is the Ukrainian word for a protective symbol or amulet.
In the Oberih series, I combine elements of Ukrainian Tripolye culture with a contemporary visual language. Archaic symbols, stars, and motifs of eyes and the sun carry the memory of ancient traditions and their symbolism into the present. The works represent protection, connection, and the strength of cultural roots. Each image can be understood as a personal Oberih—a symbol of inner… strength, preservation, and the connection between humanity, nature, and the cosmos.
Nata Statzner is a German painter of Ukrainian descent who has lived in Germany for over two decades and blends the cultural influences of her heritage into a distinctive visual language. She utilizes Cubist fragmentation, minimalist lines, and symbolism from Tripolye culture and Cycladic art to render mythical motifs and faces in an archaic and timeless way. Her works open up quiet spaces for self-reflection and speak of identity, rootedness, and the longing for belonging—conveying a profound sense of inner connection and the power of universal myths.
