The cage is open.
It has been open for a long time — long enough for the vines to reclaim the gilded walls, for the roses to grow wild through the iron lattice, for silence to settle where music once played.
And yet he stays.
Not because he cannot leave. But because freedom, when truly felt, has no need to prove itself.
I painted this eagle not as a captive and not as an escapee — but as a sovereign. A creature who chose this crumbling palace not… out of habit, but out of recognition. He sees what others walk past: the beauty in decay, the light still pouring through forgotten windows, the dignity of a place that once held grandeur and now holds something quieter — and perhaps more true.
This painting is about the kind of freedom that doesn't need an audience. About choosing to remain — not from fear, but from knowing exactly where you belong.
