About this artwork
The artist wanted to make a picture of a congregation worshipping a void. This morphed into a congregation worshipping in an empty landscape. The latter seemed to say what Nick wanted (the strangeness of idolatry and ritual) a bit better. The collage he created as a basis for the painting also suggested a vessel moving through the landscape which he thought added an extra oddness to the picture's theme.
