About this artwork
It all began with the need to feel the resistance of the material under my hands. I didn't want a smooth surface; I wanted a body that could contend with the light.
I spread the concrete on the still-bare canvas, not as a simple base, but as if I were building the foundations of a building. I trowelled it forcefully, allowing the rough grain to create reliefs, cracks, and deep grooves. I felt the weight of the material, its cold, industrial nature:… in that moment, the canvas stopped being fabric and became a wall, a piece of the city, a fragment of asphalt ready to receive a story.
Once this material framework was created, the dialogue with color began. I used acrylic spray paint to lay down the first layers of darkness and atmosphere. The spray of the cans filled the cracks in the concrete, creating deep nuances and shadows I would never have achieved with a brush. Black was no longer just a color, but an urban void, a dense night.
