In psychology, the mental process aimed at converting sensory data into meaningful concepts is called "perception". It is clear that perception is never conditioned exclusively by visual stimuli and is far from being a passive recording of the external world. It should be understood rather as a process of identification in which a stimulus arouses, at the first observation, the formulation of a perceptual hypothesis, which leads to exploring the… stimulating context again. Our mental activity takes on particular importance in the interpretations of the available data of certain perceptual situations, in which we often fall into illusions: we are convinced that we see things or events that, in fact, are not there or we do not see things that are right in front of our eyes; we can even be persuaded by a reality that is not strictly objective.
Noemi Balata, born in L'Aquila in 1994, is a multidisciplinary artist with a strong background in freehand drawing, sculpture, watercolors and computer graphics. She uses contrasting techniques and recurring pastel color combinations in her studio 'Corpi Celesti', creating visually incisive works to explore the intersection between the body and the psyche. Her works, meticulous inlays of cotton, clay and pearls, convey a continuous investigation into the transience of life and the marriages between human and non-human, challenging the concepts of beauty and sensuality.
