About this artwork
Butoh: Shades of Darkness, published by Shufunotomo, Japan, was first published in English in 1988. It is a landmark book on the Japanese avant-garde dance movement Ankoku Butoh. This photograph was taken in 1982 during rehearsals for Niwa by the Mutekisha company, featuring dancer and choreographer Natsu Nakajima. Butoh photographs have been exhibited extensively worldwide and published in numerous languages in all the countries where Butoh has… been performed. Custom sizes are available for order. Image rights can also be purchased.
Nourit Masson-Sekine, a transdisciplinary artist and graduate of the Beaux-Arts, explores painting, photography, calligraphy, watercolor, and costume design, drawing heavily on her travels, particularly to Japan. Her techniques oscillate between nuanced expressionism and minimalism, utilizing Chinese paper, ink, and Butoh photography, a style that has particularly influenced her. Her art expresses a poetic intensity and a profoundly moving human depth, seeking to reveal the mystery of perception and form, far removed from any purely decorative intent.
