About this artwork
This original solid andesite sculpture is one of the latest artworks by the Bulgarian contemporary sculptor Ognyan Chitakov, deeply inspired by naturalism, brutalism and expressionism. It has authentic natural charm, mixed with the unique artistic signature and skills. Andesite is an extrusive igneous, volcanic rock, of intermediate composition, with aphanitic to porphyritic texture. The earth layers had fallen into the mantle, had melted and then…
pushed back on the surface, where they have cooled down quickly. This brutal process describes perfectly the andesite material. It is also brutally used by human as gravel for highways. The rocks are blasted, crushed and crumbled into small pieces. The artist's concept follows this brutal material characteristics and common attitude. In ancient Greek mythology, Morpheus is the god of dreams and sleep – has the ability to take any human form and appear in dreams.

Ognyan Chitakov is an established Bulgarian sculptor whose works have featured in national prizes and exhibitions. He loves sculpture for all the elements it allows him to gather together: form, space, function, architecture, design, engineering, technology and - above all - art. He primarily produces stone works that carry ancient and sacred connections, and whose scale ranges from the modest to the monumental.
