About this artwork
In "Silentium", I explore the profound weight of absolute stillness and internal contemplation. Created with compressed charcoal on paper, this composition focuses on a young child enveloped entirely in a heavy, draped garment. Emerging from the center of this protective fabric are the child’s hands, clasped firmly together and raised in a gesture of quiet, suspended focus.
With eyes cast downward and a countenance of complete silence, the figure… represents a Stoic withdrawal from the noise of the external world into an untouchable inner sanctuary. Utilizing the strict discipline of traditional Tenebrism, I used dramatic chiaroscuro to sculpt the delicate features of the child's face and the tension in the clasped hands directly from the surrounding void. This drawing is not a portrayal of sorrow, but a powerful meditation on solitude, innocence, and the profound strength found in absolute silence.
Onur Sarial is a painter and draftsman specializing in compressed charcoal and charcoal pencil, with a background anchored in classical drawing and contemporary realism. He masterfully employs Tenebrism and chiaroscuro, weaving meticulous sfumato to sculpt monumental figures from darkness, favoring stark contrast over color. His evocative works delve into the psychological depths of vulnerability, inner conflict, and mortality, inviting viewers to quietly confront their own humanity and resilience.
