About this artwork
Continuing along the line of thought that connects freedom, fiction and play, in the Nano-Nano series I bring together what have been the most well-known dictatorships in history with the Western liberal system, highlighting their contradictions precisely through the caricature of the most significant co-protagonists of the fairy tales.
Thus, Walt Disney's beloved seven dwarfs become both the personification of insidious American-style capitalism… and the guardians of various totalitarian regimes, a well-polished double side of the same coin, which in turn reveals further inconsistencies. Embellished with a background of golden tiles of Byzantine origin, each character maintains the distinctive traits of their character and the classic cinematic iconography, but without being equipped with shovels, pickaxes or diamonds and so Aeolus holds a swastika under his arm, careful not to loosen his grip, with a clear reference to the Nazi dictatorship.
Oscar Baccilieri, born in 1965 in Reggio Emilia, develops artistically through different media such as canvas, cashmere, beeswax, marble, blotting paper, and copper, transforming the material into an intense exercise of creativity and aesthetics. He works with an enigmatic, playful and ludic aesthetic, using collage, watercolor, and acid painting techniques, mixing figurative and abstract aspects in his works. With his works, Baccilieri reveals a world rich in interpretation and meaning, inviting the viewer to look with curiosity and to reflect on our daily reality.
