About this artwork
This work is a fascinating fusion of expressionism and pop art, created with recycled sandpaper painted with acrylic and gold leaf a collage on canvas. It represents a vibrant explosion of energy and color, where the dynamism of the comic book characters jumps out of the canvas. It aims to inspire joy and liveliness, in every space. This character, Yosemite Sam, is a short gunslinger, with a huge red mustache, irascible and impulsive, always ready… to take out his pair of bananas. This work is part of the recent series of Lovely Toons, (free interpretation of Looney Tunes) in which the most representative characters of American cartoons, sanctified on a gold background like precious Russian icons, always hold a banana. This time, the symbolic fruit of the plantations of Latin America represents the exploitation of natural resources and labor that has marked the history of the development of capitalism.
Oscar Baccilieri, born in 1965 in Reggio Emilia, develops artistically through different media such as canvas, cashmere, beeswax, marble, blotting paper, and copper, transforming the material into an intense exercise of creativity and aesthetics. He works with an enigmatic, playful and ludic aesthetic, using collage, watercolor, and acid painting techniques, mixing figurative and abstract aspects in his works. With his works, Baccilieri reveals a world rich in interpretation and meaning, inviting the viewer to look with curiosity and to reflect on our daily reality.
