About this artwork
Recent discoveries of distant planets that may host both water and temperatures suitable for life have fascinated people and scientists, even while global concern for the climate crisis here on earth has increased. While we may never see such worlds with our own eyes their discovery nevertheless sparks my imagination, as a trained scientist myself, that the possibility of life on these worlds is real.
I wondered what if life on these worlds were… to have feelings or thoughts? These ideas were in my mind as I began to paint 'Life in Alpha Centauri', and I was pleased with the resulting work that aims to stimulate positive and lively feelings and thoughts in the viewer.
I mixed use of acrylic paint, created some layers and ambiguity of meaning. For example the grey grid-like structure could represent a form of evolved cyber bio-technology, a device in the place of a mouth as part of the largest organism shown.

« My dream is to be recognized as a great Turkish woman artist in history, I spend every moment of my life with this aim. »
Özlem Thompson is a Turkish-born contemporary artist known for her vivid, dreamlike paintings that combine influences from nature, science, mythology, and abstract modernism. Originally trained in Biology and Botany, she later completed postgraduate studies in exotic plants and industrial design, experiences that continue to shape the organic forms and intricate visual textures found throughout her work. Since moving to London in 2015, Thompson has built an international reputation for expressive large-scale acrylic paintings inspired by Mediterranean landscapes, imagination, and emotional storytelling. Her studio practice is based in Belsize Park, in a historic artists’ building once associated with Piet Mondrian and Ben Nicholson.
Since 2018, Thompson has exhibited extensively across the UK, Europe, and the United States. Her exhibitions include shows in New York, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Paris, Barcelona, and London, with notable appearances at the Swiss Art Expo, ArtExpo Paris.
