Credentials
- Famous Artist
Picasso worked across more media than almost any artist, and each is authenticated differently, so the first question is always what kind of Picasso you are looking at. His major paintings and drawings are catalogued by Zervos and, for significant works, authenticated only by the Picasso Administration, but these are largely museum-held and trade in six to nine figures, so for most private collectors an "original" more realistically means a unique work on paper, a drawing, or a Madoura ceramic referenced in the Ramié catalogue. Whatever the medium, a unique work lives or dies on provenance, meaning an unbroken ownership, exhibition and publication history, and on condition. His prints follow a different logic: value rests on a pencil signature, edition size, the printer's blindstamp (Mourlot, Crommelynck, Lacourière), and a catalogue reference: Bloch overall, Mourlot for lithographs, Baer for etchings, with posthumous impressions carrying a Succession Picasso estate stamp. Across all of it, a photomechanical poster is not an original and is worth a fraction of a signed work. At Singulart, we work with established galleries that carry out the authentication process, so every Picasso work, unique or editioned, is documented against the relevant catalogue, comes with a certificate of authenticity, and is backed by our specialists.
