About this artwork
I often use mythology not to illustrate it, but to listen to its resonances. Its symbols and dilemmas, though ancient, continue to speak to us with surprising power: they speak of desire, loss, memory, boundaries—and their constant transgression.
In this work, I have reworked, in a personal way, the myth of Prometheus, the Titan who stole fire from the gods to give it to mankind. For this act of disobedience, and for all his help to humanity, Prometheus… is condemned to a terrible torment: chained to the mountain, he is tortured every day by an eagle that devours his liver.
But what interests me most is another aspect: the consequences of his sacrifice. Improving the human condition does not preclude misfortune. Beyond divine punishment—Pandora's box—it is man himself, with the gifts of Prometheus, who creates the instruments of death.
And this is precisely what makes the myth more relevant than ever.
Paul Andi Bocu, born in Romania and educated at the Liceo di Belle Arti and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, primarily uses painting as his medium. He works in a figurative style that pays homage to tradition and classicism, embracing both technical virtuosity and expressive freedom; his works range across genres, still lifes, mythologies, and landscapes. Through a dialogue between the visible and the invisible, he communicates the power and necessity of beauty as a profound and human value.
