About this artwork
One of my favourite wilderness areas in New Zealand (South Island) is the Arthurs Pass region. You can drive one and a half hours from Christchurch, headed for the Southern Alps and the West Coast, stop at Klondyke corner, strap on your backpack, and walk for half an hour up the Waimakariri River and here you are a Turkey Flats the perfect place for a breather. Turkey Flats is a grass covered alluvial fan and elevated enough so you can sit and enjoy… a fabulous panorama up and down the head of the Waimakariri River. For some unexplained reason it’s one of a few places that’s very special to me in that it gives me a sense of peace and belonging.
Paul Foote is a self-taught painter whose early years exploring New Zealand's rugged South Island profoundly shaped his art. He creates realistic landscapes and seascapes, sometimes veering toward impressionism with a masterful focus on the fall of light. His brushwork captures the sense of awe and magnificence he feels in nature, channeling an emotional depth that invites viewers into dramatic, light-filled worlds.
