"Still Life #1" is a unique piece from my ongoing "Anosmia" series. This artwork combines photography and painting techniques to create a compelling visual experience.
The foundation of this piece begins with photographs of discarded flowers from cemetery bins and wildlife sourced from South Korean online markets. The image is then developed as a silver gelatin print, which undergoes a transformation through bleaching, spot toning, and delicate… hand-painting. Due to this unique process, no two prints are ever the same, ensuring you receive a truly one-of-a-kind artwork.
Inspired by the classical still life tradition, this medium-sized artwork explores themes of life, death, and the environment. The black and white palette enhances the conceptual and romantic elements, while the photorealistic details add a contemporary touch.
As this photograph is individually manipulated and painted, every image is differs from the next. This photograph is no1 from an edition of 12.
Paul Gadd is a British photographer based in Seoul, deeply rooted in classical film photography and darkroom printing, with extensive experience in fashion, portraiture, and documentary work. His technique is hands-on and experimental—scratching and toning negatives, applying mixed-media during hand-printing, and finishing with processes like bleaching or encaustic, making each print a unique original. Through his evocative images, Paul channels his personal experiences and surroundings, conveying a rich tapestry of emotions—from melancholy and anger to humour and love—inviting viewers to deeply connect with his evolving visual narratives.
