About this artwork
A young Henry Kissinger, a grouper, a swordfish, a threatening guerilla and Hitler are all on stage (or in the movies?) in this remarkable ensemble. Raised in the Jewish faith, Kissinger was born in Germany but fled during the Nazi persecution. In the US, he became a controversial political figure, sometimes supporting autocratic governments abroad. It is interesting that in this painting, he looks to the left, following Hitler’s gaze. The surrounding… icons are menacing and benign. The colors are subdued, creating a thoughtful mood. Spina had an intimate relationship with WWII. As a youngster, he followed it closely on the news and celebrated the return of his uncles from the war. With this painting, Spina wants us to feel the complexity of personalities, as they walk a fine line between good and evil.
Manhattan artist Paul Spina (1937-2017) was a masterful painter and visual artist with a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He drew on a rich background steeped in both commercial illustration and fine art exhibitions across major American cities. He employed strong draftsmanship, vivid color, dramatic perspective, expressive line, and found objects, blending influences from Rembrandt to Pollock—his work bursts with movement and biting visual harmony, often overlaying personal iconography. His paintings channel intense emotion and personal history, inviting viewers to experience the complexity of joy, loss, and outrage, and challenging them to confront complacency and the darker truths lurking beneath society’s surface.
