In this fine example of Paul’s Pop Art series, he employs vibrant primary colors and popular imagery. In the foreground, the grid structure separates the viewer from the scene beyond. There you see a ball, the 20th Century Fox logo and the Washington monument. All of these images carry personal weight for Paul. The first two remind him of his youth, playing ball on the streets of Brooklyn, NY, and going to the war movies of the 1940s. These…
are his statements in support of the working class and against war. Carrying this theme further, he focuses on the capital of the United States, where Paul attended anti-war rallies in the 1960s. Looking again at the painting, the title becomes more provocative.

Manhattan artist Paul Spina (1937-2017) was a masterful painter and visual artist with a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He drew on a rich background steeped in both commercial illustration and fine art exhibitions across major American cities. He employed strong draftsmanship, vivid color, dramatic perspective, expressive line, and found objects, blending influences from Rembrandt to Pollock—his work bursts with movement and biting visual harmony, often overlaying personal iconography.
