About this artwork
Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, cardboard, and pigment prints (collage) on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang.
The artwork consists of fragments reconstructed from extracts and enlarged sections of overpainted printed matter. The obsession of sampling, recycling, appropriating, and remixing existing material, which has been overpainted to be digitalized, to be changed in size, material and technique is like… a common thread through Peter Vahlefeld’s entire production process. To this extent he employs underpainting, collage and subtractive techniques to imbue the work with multiple surfaces. This artwork reflects the merging of gesture and representation, where the fluidity of one balances the structure of the other and the multi-layered surface is shining through the chromatic superimposition of oil, acrylic, pigment prints and cardboard.

« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
