About this artwork
With this oil painting, I captured the powerful stillness of the desert. The realistic details of the mountains and clouds radiate tranquility and grandeur. I wanted to convey the vastness and harmony of nature, so that this work would imbue your space with a warm, inspiring energy and transport you to that quiet, majestic landscape. The Roman historian Pomponius Mela comes to mind:
"More inland (away from the Mediterranean) and quite far from the… coast, if the story is to be believed, fish bones, remains of sea snails, boulders worn down by tides in the usual way and indistinguishable from beach stones, anchors stuck in rocks, and other such signs and traces are said to have miraculously been found and discovered, indicating that the sea tides once reached these regions and reached the fields, which therefore can no longer provide any food."
Pomponius Mela, around the birth of Christ
Peter Volk is a painter with academic training, working with oil, acrylic, watercolor, and sculptural techniques. He combines strong colors, subtle gradients, and color field painting, often with hyperrealistic elements, depicting landscapes, people, and rock art in surprising combinations. His works radiate a longing for authentic beauty and invite the viewer to see hidden and familiar facets of the world with new eyes.
