About this artwork
In this work, I captured the raw power and complexity of nature with vibrant colors and precise details. The oil paints give the scene a vibrant depth that transports the viewer into the fascinating complexity of an open-pit mine. My goal is to visualize the tension between humans and landscape and bring energy into the space that inspires an intense dialogue. A quote from the famous first miner, Georg Agricola, applies here:
"Whether a pyrite contains… gold or not can be determined in the following way before melting it in the test furnace. If it does not crack and does not change color after being ignited three times and quenched three times with strong vinegar, then gold is present. The vinegar used for quenching should be mixed with either human urine or salt, which is thrown into it and dissolved while stirring for three days."
Georgius Agricola vulgo Georg Bauer, 1494 – 1555, De Re Metallica Libro VII, 1556
Peter Volk is a painter with academic training, working with oil, acrylic, watercolor, and sculptural techniques. He combines strong colors, subtle gradients, and color field painting, often with hyperrealistic elements, depicting landscapes, people, and rock art in surprising combinations. His works radiate a longing for authentic beauty and invite the viewer to see hidden and familiar facets of the world with new eyes.
