About this artwork
One of three studies capturing the Sant Antoni festival in Mallorca, this piece depicts the climax of the Correfoc, or fire run, in Pollensa. The narrative centers on a "devil" figure charged with the torching ceremony, performing a symbolic dance before the burning of a large effigy that represents Saint Antoni’s resistance against temptation.
The composition explores the varying intensities of the crowd. On the right, the excitement of the spectators… is heightened by the torchlight, which bathes them in the same fiery, visceral hue as the devil’s costume. In contrast, the couple on the left remains locked in their own intimacy, oblivious to the ancient ritual unfolding before them. Through this interplay of light and shadow, the work captures the dual nature of the festival: a shared communal explosion of energy and a backdrop for private, fleeting human moments.
