that the watermill was adopted in Rome at the end of the Republic and perhaps
even a little earlier in the Greek world. In ignorance where we are
from the sources available to Pomponius, let us return to the first three texts. Only
the poet of the Palatine Anthology appears to explicitly consider the machine
like a novelty, but we must make allowance for the poetic exaggeration,
enthusiasm… in the face of a technical innovation that may already date back a few
