About this artwork
This painting is part of a series of 4 paintings of emblems: Rose, Thistle, Iris, Shamrock.
It depicts the Spring rose, a Burnet rose which is white petals and dark hips, and it and other wild dog roses of various shades of pink grow as thickets, their thorns offer the best protection to nests of bullfinches, like the ones depicted here, as well as Lesser redpolls (a finch with a pink forehead). Below a flock of starlings have descended… as have various moths and beetles.
The family garden clipping box hedge in the background, the nuthatch calls out as it finds its hoard of winter nuts, the budding beech sway gently as the white alba rose scent wafts above a dense carpet of purple headed of self-heal.
