We all have our roots in stories of migration. I am an emigrant. In 1947, my grandparents nearly drowned while crossing the Mediterranean in search of refuge in France. Their experience continues to inform my work.
This sculpture is part of a mixed-media series exploring migration, displacement, and human resilience. Using cement, barbed wire, broken mirrors, and shoelaces, I create hands in expressive gestures that convey emotions ranging from… anger and resistance to compassion and love.
Here, a hand rises through a shattered mirror, its fingers forming the sign of victory. The broken surface evokes the fragmentation and hardship of displacement, while the emerging hand expresses defiance, hope, and the possibility of renewal.
Humanity will emerge from the rubble.

Pierre Leichner, with a background rooted in both medicine and fine art, works across sculpture, painting, installation, BioArt, and video, blending scientific inquiry with poetic sensibility. His technique embraces organic materials, layered abstraction, and time-based processes, often inviting natural phenomena as collaborators. Pierre’s art evokes vulnerability and resilience while inspiring reflection and a profound sense of interconnection between humanity, nature, and community.
