About this artwork
Len Vernaghi painted the historic portal of the church of San Pietro (in Vasto, Italy), dating back to the 13th century. Of the ancient church, demolished due to the landslide of 1956, only the lower part of the facade remains, within which is set the beautiful Romanesque portal, well finished in the carvings of the splays. In the lunette you can admire a beautiful example of the infant Christ and, below the tiny sculpture, an expressive bas-relief…
depicting the Deposition of Jesus with the royal crown (rather than the usual crown of thorns). Len Vernaghi repainted this portal with light and bright colors. A portal onto the sea and the past, to cross the present and the future. Work made with acrylic colors and tempera on paper.
