About this artwork
This piece from my SOIL series is the only one without laser-etched text - and that absence is the point.
A thick vertical column of textured gesso rises through the center, cracked and organic, like a totem or a digital artifact corrupted into something physical. On either side, geometric marks float in soft gray washes - diagrams, symbols, fragments of code or ancient script.
The center commands attention but offers nothing to read, nothing to… decode. It's pure materiality - weight, texture, presence. While everything around it tries to communicate through symbols and marks, the column remains silent.
I built this tension by withholding the laser. No burned language, no machine precision cutting through the surface. Just layers of gesso poured and pulled, allowed to crack and settle on their own terms.
The title says it all: No touch. The machine didn't reach this part. What you see is untranslated, unprocessed - matter that refuses to become data.
