About this artwork
At first glance, Alfagate appears to be an every day sunlit roadside scene — where the architecture, road, and nature converge under an intense blue sky. I was drawn to the balance between the structured presence of the gatehouse walls and the powerful organic forms of the trees, which seem to dominate the environment with their living energy.
However, this work is not intended to be a straightforward landscape. As I developed the painting, I began… embedding subtle presences within the foliage and shadow. Human-like faces and animal forms emerge gradually from the trees, almost as if the landscape itself is observing the viewer. These elements are not immediately obvious; they reveal themselves slowly, encouraging prolonged looking and a shift in perception.
Alfagate was exhibited at the Galeria Azur Session 4 Exhibition in Berlin, June 2025

Ramsay Allan
United Kingdom
Ramsay Allan is a Scottish oil painter whose self-taught roots evolved through intensive study, weaving classical and contemporary influences into his practice. He skillfully unites traditional craftsmanship with surreal, symbolic imagery, blending realism and dreamlike elements through the evocative use of light, texture, and atmosphere. Allan’s artworks radiate mystery and introspection, powerfully conjuring the resilience and beauty of the human spirit, and inviting viewers to encounter profound emotional truths.
Working primarily in oils, Allan combines the technical discipline of classical realism with the emotive power of surrealism, creating works that speak both to the intellect and to the heart.
