About this artwork
In their dark rice warehouses, the Diola women of Senegal hide a secret: they have a tradition of preserving samples of very old harvests as gifts for special occasions. Like a vintage wine, the bride will be offered a bag of rice dated to her year of birth! This image, rich in emotion and color, will bring invigorating energy to any living space, stimulating joy and conversation.

Agronomist by training and photographer by passion, Raphael Belmin works alongside farmers in West Africa. A great witness to a rapidly changing rural world, he photographs the human and non-human beings who inhabit the land, questioning their tangible and intangible links. It highlights the pioneers of agroecology - scientists, activists, farmers or politicians - who are working to build alternatives for the future. Raphael Belmin's photography combines poetic and documentary registers, in a deeply empathetic and humanist pictorial style. A field photographer, he captures his subjects on the spot by composing from natural light. Raphael Belmin is the author of a book and numerous photo essays. His work is regularly published in major media, and has been recognized with international awards. His photos have been exhibited in France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Senegal.
