The flamingo became a symbol of the U.S. state of Florida shortly after the Great Depression, marked by the 1929 economic crisis. As the U.S. began to recover, the region invested in resorts and casinos, offering entertainment to a nation eager to forget the recession. At that time, importing… flamingos from the Caribbean to adorn displays of wealth and happiness became increasingly common. Gradually, the birds became symbols of this renewal. This work was part of the solo exhibition Appeal, which explored American icons through the lens of abundance and scarcity. Each piece in the exhibition was neither a praise nor a critique of the American Way of Life, but an invitation to reflect on how various elements relate to local cultures and their echoes in Brazil.

Renato Gosling is a São Paulo–based visual artist who transforms everyday subtleties into works charged with memory, affection, and critique. Born in 1976, he builds his practice from fragments of popular Brazilian life, using micro-narratives, sensory references, and childhood evocations to reflect on time, identity, and culture.
