About this artwork
STATE OF AFTERMATH III is a large-format abstract mixed-media artwork that explores transformation, transience, and material memory. Originally created in 2024 and reworked in 2026, the work combines acrylic paint, gauze, and rust to create a multi-layered surface.
Exposed textile structures, oxidized areas, and dark layers of paint create a characteristic textured art and rust art aesthetic. The visible traces of aging and change are reminiscent… of the philosophy of wabi-sabi, while the fragmented forms give rise to a subtle architectural abstraction.
The work is part of the series AFTERSTATE, in which material itself becomes the vehicle for time, change and memory.

Rhea Callen
Rhea Callen works at the intersection of material, space, and tension. At the heart of their work is the question of how forces can be experienced as a state.
Starting with the series UNDER PRESSURE, in which internal tensions and structural loads become visible, her work develops via STATICS to the current series STEERING STATE.
While in STATIK movement is increasingly bound and brought into equilibrium, this development intensifies in HALTEZUSTAT: Tension is no longer depicted, but rather maintained within the image space.
The reduced visual language uses material, layering and surface functionally – as carriers of energy. The works explore the moment before movement: energy in balance, without being discharged.
