This painting very clearly sets out the key idea of much of Robert's work. This is taking something traditional and then adding chaos and distortion to make something new, fresh and special.
In this situation Robert paints a background like a Patrick Heron painting and then covers it with his black and white Distortion Forms which are a visual metaphor for noise and chaos.… The beauty of this painting lies in the simplicity and clarity of the idea being visually represented.
Robert was influenced by paintings that explored colour such as the works by Monet, Matisse and Jackson Pollock. But he did not just want to recreate these paintings and so began looking at a way of using colour in a more contemporary context.
