About this artwork
This is one of Robert's "Electricity" paintings. These are paintings where Robert tries to make a strong visual, poetic and emotional effect with as few variables as possible. So in this painting he is just using yellow and violet to try and make a powerful impact that overwhelms the viewer.
The dark velvet background has numerous layers of transparent violet to create a surface with a lustrous depth. Robert then spends considerable time mixing… the yellow to the correct consistency to ensure the drips fall in the way he wishes. In this painting Robert decided to leave the bottom section of the painting with just the drips to add a little more depth and contrast.
While seemingly abstract the "Electricity" paintings are inspired by music and can look like fields of wheat or fields of flowers. The large size of the painting helps to cause a great impact on the viewer.
