The Hanlet family has a deep connection with the piano, beginning in 1866 with the establishment of their first workshop in Belgium. For approximately fifty years, they crafted high-quality pianos, strengthening the family's reputation for instrument making. I discovered and photographed one of these pianos in this pottery factory where nature is gradually reclaiming its rights.
Romain Thiery uses photography and sound recording, drawing on his background as a photographer and amateur pianist. He combines a documentary aesthetic with a poetic and pictorial approach, exploiting natural light and the contrasts between ruins and instrumental nobility. His style emphasizes textures, careful compositions, and the integration of sounds captured on location. Through his works, he evokes a profound melancholy, evoking ephemeral beauty, lost memory, and the poetry of abandonment, while paying homage to the symbolic power of the piano.
